Across the state and the country there is a recent trend involving theft of Kia and Hyundai vehicles.  This is a result of a social media trend instructing thieves on how to defeat these vehicles.

The vehicles affected are:

Hyundai:     2017-2020 Elantra
                       2015-2019 Sonata
                       2020-2021 Venue

Kia:                2017-2022 Sportage

Both manufacturers are offering free software upgrades and anti-theft devices.  They are also notifying owners by mail when their vehicle is eligible for the upgrade, which is performed at the dealerships.

If you see any suspicious activity, especially in parking areas, please call Duke University Campus Police immediately at 919-684-2444 or report it using the LiveSafe mobile app.
