Employee FAQs

I don't have a permit for Parking Garage 2. Can I still park there?
Anyone with a valid Duke permit may park in most facilities between 5pm and 6:59am weekdays and all day on weekends.

Permit types listed below are valid in PGI, PGII, PGIII and Research Dr. Garage between 2:30pm – 9:00am weekdays and all day on weekends. If you park between 9:00am and 2:30pm, you must park in your designated lot and use Duke Transit or Van Services (scroll down and see Medical Center Evening Van Ride Procedures).

These permits are not permitted to be in a garage between 9:00am and 2:30pm on weekdays:

  • HR -  For staff working rotating shifts
  • HEW - For staff working night and/or weekend shifts
  • H, R1 and R2 For staff who primarily work days but may have an occasional need to park in PGII afterhours

Note: H permits are no longer available for purchase.

A free night permit (NGT) is available for staff who do not own a permit and need to park after 5pm and leave prior to 6:59am weekdays or weekends.

To obtain a permit, visit Duke FlexPort or a Parking office.

I have a PGIII (PGC) permit. Can I park in PGII across from the Hospital?
PGC permit holders may park in PGII only between 2:30pm and 9am on weekdays, and any time on Saturday and Sunday.

I work part-time and need a permit but am not eligible for payroll deduction.  What should I do?
You can purchase an available permit online and pay for it with a credit card. Visit Duke FlexPort.

I have a permit for a parking facility, but when I visit Duke for a doctor's appointment, I'd rather park closer and pay the fee. Is that ok?
Yes, however, we encourage employees to park in their permitted facility even when visiting for an appointment. If you park at Parking Garage 1 (Trent Drive, serving Duke Clinic, Cancer Center and Duke Medical Pavilion) without a valid permit, you should remove your permit from your vehicle before arriving at the facility. Otherwise, the parking system will read your permit (even if stored in the glove box), indicate it is invalid, and prevent you from pulling a visitor ticket.

Does my parking fee start on the first of the month?
No. The parking month runs from the 16th of one month through the 15th of the next. The annual parking cycle runs from August 16 to August 15. If you are paying via payroll deduction, the payment is made in arrears. For example, the December payroll deduction pays for parking from Nov. 16 through Dec. 15.

I'm an employee and don't need my permit. What should I do?
Return the permit to one of our offices or mail it to us. If we do not receive your permit, your payroll deductions will continue. We'll process the return when we receive your permit in our office, so mailing a permit will delay the process slightly.

Do you pro-rate payroll deductions for partial months?
No, we do not issue refunds for payroll deducted permits, even if used for part of a month. For example, if you return your permit between November 16 and December 15, your paycheck in December will be deducted for the entire monthly amount. If you return your permit on November 15 and do not purchase a replacement, your paycheck in December will not be deducted.

I'm currently paid biweekly but am transitioning to a monthly staff position. Do I need to do anything about my payroll deduction?
If you change from monthly to biweekly payroll or vice versa, advise us via tranpark@duke.edu. We will make the appropriate changes to ensure your payments and access continue without interruption.
