Three Zipcar vehicles added to campus fleet

January 31, 2011With slightly more than 900 members of the Duke community using the Zipcar service, three cars have been added to the campus fleet, bringing to 11 the total cars available for  reservation by the hour or day.

Of the three vehicles, one Nissan Sentra and a Honda Insight hybrid will be kept at the Eye Center Lot and one Sentra will be found on Central Campus, outside the Devil’s Bistro. Duke now has cars at six locations across Duke University and Duke University Health System.

“The big thing we wanted to accomplish with these cars was to cover areas of campus that haven’t been covered before,” said Brian Williams, Duke’s transportation demand coordinator. “There are thousands of employees and medical students in the Health System that should have quick access to Zipcars, rather than walking somewhere else on campus to find one.”

New vehicles have been added because student, faculty and staff participation in Duke’s Zipcar program has increased, Williams said. Duke has seen continued growth of Zipcar users, which numbered about 500 in January 2009 to about 910 at present. Duke found that the Zipcar vehicles on campus were being utilized by members more than 40 percent of the time in October.

Of the current Zipcar members at Duke, about 700 are students, Williams said. He added the Zipcar program appeals to students because it’s less expensive than making monthly car or insurance payments and users don’t pay for gas.

“With Zipcars on East, West and now Central campus, there’s a Zipcar everywhere students live,” Williams said. “When you’re done using your Zipcar, you save time because you don’t have to hunt for parking – there’s a space waiting for you right where you picked it up.”

With the new additions, Duke’s fleet of Zipcars now includes four Honda Insight hybrids, two Toyota Prius hybrids, two Honda Civics, two Sentras and a Toyota Matrix.

Along with the two new locations, Zipcars can be found in others areas:

•    The West Campus quad
•    The surface lot near the Bryan Center parking garage
•    East Campus on Campus Drive
