New parking garage opens Jan. 4 to Duke permit holders
The new Research Drive Garage will open Jan. 4 to Duke permit holders, freeing up about 1,650 parking spaces in other nearby lots for faculty and staff.
With many people on waiting lists to gain access in these nearby lots, the opening of the new garage on Research Drive near Erwin Road is expected to open spaces in sold-out PG-II, LaSalle Street, Hock Plaza and Circuit Drive lots, allowing garage access near the medical campus, said Melissa Harden, assistant director of Parking and Transportation Services.
“Parking anywhere at Duke is in high demand and in short supply,” Harden said. “The most highly demanded parking is in the research sector of campus, where the garage is being built. This is going to help relieve some parking congestion.”
Construction of the garage began in June 2008 and when completed, will feature more than 1,900 total spaces, including 1,647 for employees and 267 for patients and visitors. Unique aspects of the garage are its “green” features, which include two 10,000 gallon cisterns that collect rainwater for landscaping; overhead canopies that use plants to provide shade on the roof; and parking spaces with electrical outlets for re-charging hybrid vehicles. The garage is being considered for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) designation, a rarity for parking garages.Beginning Monday, Dec. 14 through Wednesday, Dec. 23, Research Drive Garage permit holders can begin exchanging their current parking permits for the new garage permit at the Parking and Transportation office, 0100 Facilities Center, Coal Pile Drive.
For convenience and to avoid delays, parking and transportation officials encourage employees to make the permit exchange on their last working day before the Dec. 24 holiday. The office will be closed Dec. 24, 2009 to Jan. 4, 2010.
Research Drive Garage permit holders who are working between Dec. 24 and Jan. 3, 2010, before the new garage opens, may park in the patient/visitor section in PGI and PGII during regular business hours. Pull a ticket upon entering those garages and show the Research Drive Garage permit to the attendant to exit at no charge.
If employees are unable to exchange their permit before the holidays, parking and transportation staff will be at the Research Drive Garage to exchange permits between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily Jan. 4 through Jan. 8. Customers moving to Research Drive Garage may continue parking in their current parking lots until they have exchanged their permit no later Jan. 8.
The main entrance for the new garage is off Research Drive, across the street from Medical Sciences Research Building II. Employees who need to get to Duke North may use a pedestrian walkway that runs along the side of the Medical Sciences Research Building, Edwin L. Jones Building, through the Clinical and Research Laboratory and into Anlyan Tower of Duke North.
Spaces remain available in the Research Drive Garage. Permits cost $62.50 a month for premium rate parking , the same rate for seven other parking locations at Duke. There are also spots at the reserved rate, primarily for doctors and administrators, at about $88 a month.
