Arrive early for Duke football game Saturday

September 02, 2009

As thousands of Blue Devil football fans gear up for Saturday’s season opener against University of Richmond, event organizers are encouraging Duke employees and visitors to arrive early to avoid delays with traffic, parking and admission lines.

At least 4,451 Duke faculty and staff have snapped up 17,658 free tickets to the 7 p.m. kick-off, which is part of Duke Appreciation for faculty and staff; last year’s season opener drew 32,571 people. It’s not too late for faculty and staff to get tickets to Saturday's game; the deadline is noon Saturday.

“The support we received from the Duke community last year was simply outstanding,” said Coach David Cutcliffe, who invited fans to wear Duke blue to Saturday’s game. “Our fans play a vital role in creating a great home game atmosphere for our team, and we want Duke employees to be a huge part of that experience.”

For Duke employees, Saturday’s Duke Employee Kick-Off Celebration begins at 4 p.m. at K-ville Quad, where employees and family members can enjoy a free buffet meal, games, music and the “Blue Devil Alley” football team march to Wallace Wade Stadium before the kick-off. The festivities are sponsored by Duke Athletics and Human Resources.

Weather on Saturday is expected to be ideal for football: mostly sunny with a high near 85 during the day and clear with a low around 62 at night.

Employees and visitors should try to avoid NC 751 and Duke University Road on game day (fans with Iron Dukes parking passes are encouraged to use these roads for parking in the Iron Dukes designated areas of the Blue Zone and NC 751 lots).

Employees with a valid Duke parking permit must present the permit to park for free in the following parking lots, which open at 3 p.m. Saturday:

* Chemistry (corner of Circuit and Towerview)
* Circuit (corner of LaSalle and Circuit)
* Hock Garage (off of Erwin Road opposite Research Drive)
* Lot H (off of Erwin by the corner of Anderson and Yearby)
* PG 1 (off Flowers and Yearby)

Employees without a valid parking permit must pay the general public parking rate of $5 per vehicle.

Free shuttles buses will run in a loop to the West Campus bus stop by the Duke Chapel starting at 3 p.m. from two parking areas - the Lot H off of Erwin Road opposite Research Drive and PG 1 off Flowers and Yearby. There is a five to 10 minute walk to the stadium from the West Campus bus stop. The shuttles will operate for one hour after the game, picking up passengers at the bus stop and returning them to the two designated shuttle parking lots.

In addition to wearing Duke blue, fans are invited to be as “green” as possible to support Duke’s sustainability initiative to reduce the campus carbon footprint. Waste stations will be inside Card Gym and around the perimeter of the fan zone for recycling of plastic bottles and cans and composting of other waste.
