Eye Center Traffic Restriction

July 14, 2009 Access in and out of the Duke Eye Center will be restricted beginning as early as Wednesday and through the weekend due to a City of Durham utility project.

Motorists traveling on Erwin Road may face congestion and delays by the Eye and VA Medical centers since traffic will be limited to right turns only for both entry and exit at each entrance. Drivers traveling west on Erwin Road will need to turn around past the Eye Center and travel back in order to enter since construction on the turn lane in the middle of the road will prevent left-hand turns.

Construction along Erwin Road and Fulton Street began in March to upgrade city water and sewer lines. It will last into the fall.

One section of the project runs along Erwin from the Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital to the VA Medical Center, about 450 feet west from the intersection of Erwin Road and Fulton Street. The other section of the project extends along Fulton Street from Shirley Street to Elba Street.

Construction outside of the North Pavilion is ongoing at Fulton and Pratt streets.

Duke commuters using Erwin Road are urged to allow more travel time, take extra caution in the construction zone and consider alternate routes.
